Final Guideline (x2) for writing UWC book article

Based on the Guideline posted in this blog on 30 June 2008, several amendments (mainly on the language issue) have been made because of some recent updates. They are all on italics. Any party concerned should refer to the following:

1. Suggested format:

i. Interview (written in essay form): you (journalist) interview a selected interviewee (alumni / principals / teachers / students, etc). Suitable for interviewees who need guidance for presenting ideas & who lack time to write articles by himself/herself.

2. Method of interview / information exchange: in person / telephone / email / msn…..any kind you (journalist) think is effective

4. Language Medium: English (in Proper/Formal English) or Chinese (in Proper/Formal Chinese, no Cantonese please!)

5. Presentation way: Words + Photos

6. No of words: about 2,000 – 2,500 words (English without punctuation marks or Chinese characters with punctuation marks included)

7. No of photos: at least 10 (should be very eye-catching!).

8. Graphic design: You (journalist) DO NOT NEED to do any graphic design of your chapter/article. What you need to do is to submit article + at least 10 photos to our designated designer. However, you can help by matching each photo with corresponding paragraph in your article. Tell the designer your ideas in written form. He/she will help you for the design.

9. Tips for excellent articlesAll articles MUST include the following:
i. Creative chapter title
ii. Sub-titles (副題) in between paragraphs
iii. Must-know knowledge (小知識) or Useful tips (小錦囊) like in-depth info, interesting facts, personal insight. E.g. When the article is mentioning about “IB”, we suppose that our readers, who are general public, may not know what it means. So please provide some “must-know knowledge” like a sentence or two about IB and include the official website. Do not put the knowledge in the content but on either left or right hand side of a page, preferably in smaller font.
iv. Figures, tables & charts
v. Interviewees bios (similar to CV but in short form): maximum 10 items (either working experience, educational attainment, award or all of them)

We have still got couple of enquiries concerning the work about Journalist, Editor and Marketing and publicity personnel. You can refer to the below descriptions. Weclome to copy and paste for any kind of circulation:

1. Journalist: for each article, an journalist has to interview and write 2500 words (English or Chinese). Creating title, sub-title, gathering photos for the article are necessary. He/she has to communicate with his/her editor for interview angle and content.

2. Editor: for each article, an editor has to "supervise" and comment on an journalist's suggestions on angle and content. Proofreading is neccessary. Preferably a reporter / journalist in current or previous full-time job, or having a solid experience in editing.

3. Marketing and publicity personnel: selling" the book, networking for article contribution from other UWCs, helpers recruitment, website updates, negotiation with publisher and graphic designer, etc.

I have recently put an "ad" on Mountbatten UWC Alumni email network on 8 Aug 2008. As we are still recruiting volunteers for help, please try to spread the messages.

Join us: write down how UWC changes our lives!

We are a group of UWC graduates who would like to solicit support (in terms of contributors, writers and editors of articles, coordinators on administration and marketing) from fellow UWCers like you on publishing a book on our common UWC experiences.

The primary objective of the book is, through recording and publication of personal experiences, to share with fellow UWCers, parents and others the benefits of UWC education. We also hope to demonstrate how our alumni do contribute to society what we have gained through UWC education, that was made possible only with the generosity of donors and sponsors.

Having made enquiries of book publishers and given the limited resources available to us given that this is a private (as opposed to official) project, we are aiming at limited circulation of the book in Hong Kong initially, and overseas thereafter (in planning stage). We intend to donate profits (if any) from the distribution of the book to fund scholarships or projects of LPC UWC. [As we do not expect substantial funds to be raised through this book, given its limited scale, we feel that it is more manageable to focus on LPC UWC at this stage.]

The book will be bilingual (Chinese and English). We invite those of you who are interested in contributing to the book to contact us on or before 31 August 2008. Other forms of contribution are also welcome.

Atlantic College Amnesty International Letter Writing Campaign 2008

January 20, 2008

St. Donat’s Castle/19.1.2008 The flame of change burns throughout the night whenever students of Atlantic College come together each year at the beginning of January to participate in the Amnesty International Letter Writing Campaign. The campaign is organised by the AC Amnesty International activity and has already a long tradition. Some 150 students from over 85 countries come and spend one night, from 8pm to 8am, in the college’s library to express their protest against international human rights violations in thousands of letters send to the powerful and influential in the world.

This year students are writing letters to the Iranian Ambassador to the UK, Rasul Movahedian, urging him to stop the execution of Delara Darabi. Darabi faces execution for a crime she committed when she was underage. However the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights urges states not to impose death sentences for crimes permitted by persons below the age of 18.

Furthermore they call upon the President of Belarus, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, to stop the “obstruction, harassment, and intimidation of civil society activists”, especially concerning the prisoner of conscience Zmitser Dashkevich. Not only the Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also Bregadier General Avihai Mandelblit, the Military Judge Advocate General of Israel will receive some hundred letters from Atlantic College students. While the Ministry of Health of Congo is urged to provide adequate stocks of essential medicines and medical equipment for women raped by government soldiers, General Avihai Mandelblit is asked to impose a moratorium on house demolitions and forced evictions in the occupied West Bank until the law is amended to bring it into line with international standards.

The student organisers of this year’s campaign, Knut Kitching (Canada), Nabila Abdel-Aziz (Germany) and Izzat Shamroukh (Palestine), see the annual Letter Writing Night as their contribution to the Amnesty International organisation, which was founded in 1961. One of AI’s first action was a letter writing campaign against the imprisonment of two Portuguese teenagers raising their glasses to freedom during a toast. The following active protest of the international community did not only lead to the release of the two Portuguese boys, but also laid the fundament for an international human rights movement that has today more than 2.2 million members. The Amnesty International activity of Atlantic College also plans and realises Street Theatres across the year demonstrating against various issues (eg. Guantanomo Bay, The Wall in Palestine).

The Letter Writing Campaign organisers expect to be able to post around 2000 letters on Monday morning, each envelope containing an appeal to stop human rights violation, an appeal to peace and justice all around the world, an appeal to protect the human.

After 2-week invitation, we have very few comments. I suppose most of our voice has being expressed by one another. Hence, we shall finalize the following

Primary Objective:
1. To promote a new kind of education (i.e. UWC mission and vision) to UWCers, parents and those who are interested

Secondary Objectives: (decrease of importance)
2. To formally record our memories and share to all UWCers & LPCers
3. Show our UWC sponsors how our alumni are contributing back to society & appeal to potential sponsors
4. Generate a profit and donate to LPCUWC for scholarship / project funds

Also, billingual mode (English + Chinese) will be adopted as the medium of the book. This is to match with our UWC goal as a place for international understanding. Editors and journalists are highly suggested to discuss the preferred language and let the committee knows before they start to write.

Hi Friends! I have visited this blog once for every 2 days and see if anyone got feedback on our current discussion about objectives and target readers. Well, it seems it is quite silent. I hope it is because what some of us (including me) have already voice what you are currently thinking. If not, or if you want to say something more, please remember to post!

Our work is going on in a steady pace. I know that friends like Isabel and Shirley have been planning the questions and contacting relevant teachers/students. It is also great that we have a helping hand from Cheramie Cheung (LPCUWC 06-08) who have just graduated from LPC. Apparently she knows all the LPC updates then anyone of us.

Also, I have been contacting Unitedwords (www.unitedwords.org). As written in its website, "United Words is a student-led initiative at Atlantic College aiming to promote the United World Colleges ideals and to provide a platform for dialogue within the UWC-movement. Created in November 2007 with the financial support of two AC graduates, is featuring articles and videos on both UWC and global issues." They will be contributing articles and we may also invite them for an interview. Again, please offer your hand if you want to help in this topic.

I have also received some feedback on the scope of our objectives (4 in total) being too broad. Comments like "Serving general public, UWCers, parents and donors" at a time may seem to be difficult.

Hence, I suggest the first objective to be the primary objective and the second to fourth objectives to be the secondary objectives.

Primary Objective:

We continue to receive more comments on our hottest topic - the Use of Language from my year, my second years as well as UWCGO committee. Good to hear some different opinions in order to stimulate our thinking since we never come up with a definite solution during the previous meetingsssss.

Last Saturday I met with the UWCGO committee in LPCUWC for a more detailed discussion. Committee members of our book like Eric Chan and Fiona Chung were also present. Comments from them suggests that pure Chinese is perhaps not the appropriate medium. Bilingual (English + Chinese) or pure English is more preferred. I got similar comments recently from different sources like telephone and this blog.

As said, my primary concern is on the marketing prospective. We have to suit what the readers (general public) and publisher/distributor's wants and needs. I agree with most of you that our readers usually can read both languages. The problem here comes with the publisher/distributor - who are the "middleman". If these people stop us from putting the book on their shelf, our target of "promote the book to the general public" may be affected. If we are to do so, we need to pay double effort to convince them.

In order to understand more about the what publisher/distributor thinks, I called well-known local publishers like Hong Kong Economic Times (經濟日報), Mingpao (明報), Crown (皇冠) and Cosmo (天地) and do a bit of research on their comments on our problems.

Half of them (2) suggested pure Chinese and any half (2) have no definite answers. It is important that all of them said they cannot provide a concrete answer now and can do so only after submitting of the WHOLE draft, which we did not do at the moment.

I am not sure if the above publisher/distributors are pro-Chinese language as most of their books are in Chinese. This may cause a biased result. As I don't have any source and idea for "pro-bilingual" and "pro-English" publisher/distributors, I very much hope that you can give us some idea on these kind of publisher/distributors.

Obviously I do not mean to be against the goal of UWC international understanding by having pure Chinese, as I am one of the UWCers like you! And it does not make sense to "exclude" any group from sharing all our laughter and tears. It is a book for our memories. It is fine for any changes if neccessary.

I suggest we have a 2-week period (14 - 27 July) for more comments on this issue: the use of language. What do you think after reading this post? Bilingual, pure Chinese or pure English? And the reasons? We also welcome those who have commented - you can add more opinions here.

After that, I hope we will have a more concrete answer in order for our editors and journalists to start their work.

Conclusion on Use of Language

This is James again.

We have had a nice dinner yesterday (29 June 2008) and our group has come to the conclusion about the use of language of our book.

In respond to the need of readers and book disturbutors, we agree to have the book in Chinese.

We are sorry for those who wish to write in English. Please find help from those who can translate. If you find problems on this, please let our committee know. We will try our best to help.

We will consider to have another book in English if resources allow. However, we shall focus on the current book at the moment.

Pls give your comments: Use of Language - Chinese/English/Bilingual

Hofan has sent me a question about the use of language: Chinese/English/Bilingual.

Actually we have talked about this in our previous meetings. Somehow no conclusion has been come up.

And what I write in the draft guideline in previous post here is "Chinese".

WE got a variation here.

Let me explain the reason I suggest "Chinese". As I have talked to a publisher from Commerical Press (who is Eugenia Lo, also a LPC alumni) and we think that we should somehow fit our readers, i.e. local people.

Well, it is a hard decision (not to have English articles) as we also want to let many cannot-read-Chinese alumni to share the book.

However, it is hard for any bookstores in Hong Kong to put a bilingual book on their bookshelf. It is quite ironic - because of this problem. But somehow it is the norm.

Publishing book nowadays are very easy. Therefore bookshops like Page One or Commercial Press can be very selective on what to put on shelf - in order to maximize their profit.

Engenia also suggests that we can publish our book by "self-finance" mode (自資出版). Or we can only target on "insiders" only, i.e. UWCers, LPCers and parents. But this will neglect the public and sponsors. Hence we have come up with the objectives in the first meeting that we would like to let them know more about UWCs through this book.

Hence I suggest it to be in Chinese only.

Would like to hear from your comments, especially if you can consult someone who is also in the publishing field.

We are a group of alumni as well as friends who have gone through either local or overseas University education. Majority of us have been working in different fields and setting for several years. Fields includes Finance, Business, Education, Journalism, NGOs, Law, etc. Apart of the core committee in Hong Kong, we are managed to gather some overseas support to our core committee during the preparation and execution stage.
